Keith Haring

The illusion of movement

Bring students to understand how the artist represents movement in his works
(identify graphic elements indicating movement then animate a composition)

Session 1: spotting movement indicators

  • observe works (using the internet - many reproductions available)

  • make an inventory of the means used - reproduce them on cards/memory sheets

  • start painting colored backgrounds

Session 2: "International youth year 1985" - setting a character in motion

  • prepare articulated puppets (in connection with discovering the living world; the human body)

  • place the puppet on a colored background and outline it - cut out

  • paste the character on another colored background, leaving space at the bottom to represent the ground - using a large black marker (or paint and a thin brush), outline the character, add the line of the ground and motion indicator graphics.

Session 3: reinvestment

This time select a work in which the characters do something together.

Make a quick inventory of possible situations.

Realize then present to the class (tell the situation-give a title as artists do)

collective criticism

For further

Select a work with graphic signs inside and around the characters.

Make assumptions about the presence of these graphics inside and outside. (effervescent environment? noise? life?...)

Represent one or more characters using this technique.
