Language workshop: Santa Claus seen by children

Workshop led by 6 children

The children are gathered around the table, the teacher has taken a sheet and a pencil. Now the children are used to it, they know that I am going to write down what they tell me and then I can read it back to them (which they really like).

Caution: do not display any representation of Santa Claus in the class for the moment.

  • What does this Santa Claus look like?

  • How is he dressed ?

  • Where does he live ?

  • Who does he live with?

  • Comment vient-il la nuit de Noël ?        _cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_     Link to the page

The children are then invited to draw Santa Claus (red and black markers  provided).

Then write in capitals SANTA CHRISTMAS.

The children's words will be transcribed and drawings inserted for the group's notebook.

discovery of writing

At Christmas, the tree invites itself into homes and even at school...

File 1                                     Identify the letters that make up your name

Develop attention and memory

The session will begin with oral games designed to familiarize students with les letters.

(provide labels with fir tree letters plus a few intruders, for the board and for the students)

  •   is there this letter in the word tree?

  • Where is the letter P hidden?

Reconstitute the word tree on the board then individually with the labels.

Fiche 2          _cc781905-5cde- 3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_                              Recognize his name among intruders

We will then invite the students to locate the word sapin among others:

  • known, such as first names and/or class lexicon

  • unknown, but with similar spellings

Work on phonology by asking to quote words beginning with "sa" or ending with "pin". Play pigeon-vole with these same syllables.

When the word is well known to the students, they can complete the worksheet.

Sheet 3                                     Compare different graphics systems

After working on the words as before and à  with the help of the referents posted in the class or the individual sprite, the students will be able to carry out this work

The catalog of Christmas toys

Goals :Identify and know why we use a catalog

Children discover a range of Christmas toy catalogs (different formats - different brands, etc.)

  • What is it?   catalogs

  • Why a catalog and why aren't they called "books"

Qu'est-ce qu'un catalogue ?_cc781905-5cde- 3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_  a set of things (here Christmas toys) that areclassified.

          _cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905 -5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_         _cc781905-5cde-3194- bb3b-136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905- 5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_     _cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b- 136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905-5cde- 3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_ There is an organization, the toys are not presented haphazardly.

  • Let's look inside....photos of toys, prices, words....

  • Let's take a better look (let the children manipulate)

_cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_ - the summary or list (= page numbering)

_cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_ - the grouping of toys in different classes (baby, girls, boys, teen, family)

          _cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_ - signs, codes = numbers (price)

          _cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905 -5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_         _cc781905-5cde-3194- bb3b-136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905- 5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_     _cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b- 136bad5cf58d_      = words (names, descriptions)

          _cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905 -5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_         _cc781905-5cde-3194- bb3b-136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905- 5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_     _cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b- references

  • Let's compare the covers

_cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_- store signs (we know where to buy it - children easily name the names of stores by seeing the logos)

_cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_- representations (toys, Santa Claus, Christmas tree...) we already know what we will find inside

The letter (to Santa Claus)

Goals :Identify and know why we use a letter

  • If we use the albumLaura's secret

Discover a new type of writing: the letter

Identify the criteria (layout, formulas, etc.)

Find the list inside the letter to Santa Claus

---> Laura writes a letter to Santa Claus, what does she ask him?

  • If we don't use the album, another approach

After having discovered and manipulated the catalogues, the teacher suggests that the pupils make their choice (choose the favorite toy) and inform Santa Claus.

Why a letter?

to write Santa Claus whatever you want - because he is far away

          _cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905 -5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_         _cc781905-5cde-3194- bb3b-136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905- 5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_     _cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b- 136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905-5cde- 3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_               because we can't use the school phone

          _cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905 -5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_         _cc781905-5cde-3194- bb3b-136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905- 5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_     _cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b- 136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905-5cde- 3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_                - so that he does not forget (the written record)

How to proceed ?

- inventory of equipment  (pen, paper, envelope, stamp)

- write the letter (date, sender, addressee, subject of the letter, polite expressions...)

- make the envelope (recipient, stamp, address standard with code...) you can decorate the envelope

- post the letter (the postman, the post a trade)

(The letters are given to the parents "so that they post it after class or if we make the trip to post the letters do not forget to give a copy to the parents)

Dictation to the adult:

While the students are looking for their favorite toy in the catalog, the teacher writes the letter (1 student at a time) emphasizing the characteristics of a letter (the date, Dear..., subject of the letter, formula courtesy, signature)

For the signature, the students write their own first name at the bottom of the letter and stick the chosen toy.

The envelope can be written and decorated by the pupils in autonomous copy (simple text - expl: PAPA NOËL   LE PÔLE NORD)
