Period 1

Sizes

Objectives of the period:

  • Compare and sort objects by size

Link to the DINO album at school

  • Ascending order: arrange the images according to the size criterion

Tree leaves - classify by size:

The medical visit

Measure, compare children's sizes

Concept of large/medium/small

Specify the larger, smaller, as large vocabulary

Give a method to compare lengths

Compare/classify, compare/order, order

Material :strips of paper, markers, a ruler to make a height chart

Procedure:

  • Attach  identical strips of paper along a wall.

  • By 2, ask the pupils to  put a thin book on the head of the one who is against the strip of paper and make a mark.

  • Cut the strips at the location of the marker and have the students' first names written.

  • Take 5 or 6 strips in order to limit the comparison work

  • Point out that to make a good comparison you need a common base (the feet) and see who goes the highest.

  • Arrange from smallest to largest and largest to smallest. Notice that you get a sort of ascending or descending staircase.

  • use the vocabulary: larger, smaller, as large

Extension :

insert a strip among those that have just been arranged.

The strips can then be decorated by the students and hung in the hallway as decoration, knowing that the students will return to them and compare themselves to the strip of this or that classmate.
