The magnets...

Use, make, manipulate objects
New! Dec 2022

Observe physical phenomena:

Construction game with magnets

Phase 1

Discovery - free exploration (to be repeated many times to observe regularities which are the manifestations of physical phenomena

Phase 2(directed workshop)

Take stock of discoveries

  • attraction / repulsion

  • materials that stick or not

Magnetization does not concern all materials - check the proposals - (name the material: iron)

Phase 3

Note that the action of magnetism can be exerted through a thin obstacle

(journey of a paper clip, a marble,... on a cardboard support)

Stage 4

Make a magnetic game (learn how to move an object with a magnet)

Another approach: the magnets of the magnetic board

Discovery phase

Have fun with the magnetic board magnets.

The pupils are asked to place the magnets everywhere in the class (other than on the board) to see if they stick everywhere.

Pooling:

"it sticks, it clings to the legs of chairs, tables and benches, on the key to the cupboard, on the Mistress's desk, on the storage box for small equipment...etc"

Experiment with small equipment... From this moment on, using a precise vocabulary "attracts" "adheres"

Clearly specify the objects that are attracted and the others, ask yourself why and conclude:

"the magnet attracts iron objects"

Experimentation

Objectives: Use precise vocabulary - formulate hypotheses - experiment

_cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_          Constater les magnetization phenomena

_cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_          Différencier le iron other materials

With paper:

  • Students regularly see the teacher posting documents or assignments on the magnetic board

==>the magnet adheres to an iron object through a sheet of paper

Tenter d'afficher un carton very thick --> it does not hold =the magnet force is not strong enough.

We can propose the following small challenge:"How many sheets of paper do you think it takes to stop the force of the magnet?"

(Laisser les élèves proposer des solutions and do the tests with sheets of paper)

  • During another session, move a paper clip (decorated or not) on a sheet of paper (decorated or not) using a magnet.

Les élèves pourront remarquer que le trombone et l'aimant sont chacun d one side of the sheet.

==> the magnet attracts an iron object through a sheet of paper

You can have small characters and a setting made and play at telling a story by manipulating the characters.

Demander à 2 ou 3 volontaires de dessiner ce qu'ils ont fait and understood to keep track in the knowledge binder.

With water :

  • Use a small fishing game in which there are small fishing rods fitted with a magnet.

Placer les petits poissons (ou trombones) dans un récipient contenant de l water and ask: (without showing the canes)

"How do you get small fish out of the bottom of the water without getting your hands wet, without putting your hands in the water?"

Allow students to express themselves and experiment.

Demander à 2 ou 3 volontaires to draw what they have done and understood to keep track in the knowledge binder.

With plastic:

  • Use empty plastic water bottles. Put the paperclip in the bottom of the bottle and ask:

"How do you remove the paperclip without turning the bottle over and without a fishing rod?"

Mettre des aimants à disposition - Allow students to express themselves and experiment.

Demander à 2 ou 3 volontaires to draw what they have done and understood to keep track in the knowledge binder.

Keep track in the knowledge binder

We take the drawings made and submit them to the criticism of the class group. We check that they represent the experiment carried out and we dictate to the teacher a short text that summarizes what happened. We can also take photos of the different experiences for a mini-report.

Assessment

Know how to identify the objects that are attracted by a magnet by offering small equipment (we sort and then check)

Or on sheet

  • circle or color the objects

  • cut out and paste in the correct column those that are attracted and those that are not
