Period 4 - Carnival Project

Interdisciplinary project

Project launch

Oral Language and Discovery of the World

Identify known festivals

What is a party?

Look for examples (if necessary show photos - leaf through last year's culture book...)

Describe these festivals...What do they consist of?

and classify themdepending on when they relate:

  • according to the seasons, the months, to be located in the year

  • put the photos in chronological order

  • locate dates on a calendar

Children's responses:

Birthday - Castanyada - Christmas - Tio - Epiphany - Mardi-gras - Candlemas - Valentine's Day

Very often they know how to talk about the party without knowing its name (the pancake party, the galette...)

Evoke other festivals

Music Festival (the first day of summer)

July 14 (parade - fireworks)

Common point :the social aspect

Holidays call for gatherings

Prioritize Carnival

Back to Mardi-gras, disguises, masks.

Specify the function of the mask

  • not be recognized

  • to become different from what one is

look for examples

(For children, the mask is mainly used to look pretty, so this questioning is important.)

Show images of Carnival(photos, videos, magazines,...)

Nice, Venice, Dunkirk, Limoux, Rio, Martinique,...

  • describe them

  • notice the elements of the parade (floats, musicians, big heads, giants, umbrellas...) and the decorations of the city

  • present the image of King Carnival on his float, explain
